As we have learned from previous experiences of relegation, there are always players who massively benefit from the step down and really come into their own – this season, it’s clearly been Jodi Jones. Whereas last year his lack of end product saw him relegated to an impact substitute role, this season, there is no doubt that he is our main man. When Jones plays well, we win.
There is a debate to be had whether Jones’ improved form and end product this season are down to the step down in quality or due to improvements he’s made in his game, what ever the reason is, he’s been allowed to build up some confidence and has become one of the most devastating attacking players at this level. While not everything he does comes off, he has the self-belief this season to keep persevering when things don’t go his way. In a team otherwise filled with mostly solid and functional players, having someone willing to drive forward with the ball and beat players makes a huge difference. The only concern with Jones at the moment is that we’re very reliant on him for our attacking threat, a big injury or getting sold in January would be a hammer-blow for our promotion prospects.
