Liam Kelly

Position: Central Midfielder

Age: 27 *

At Club Since: Summer 2017

Total Club League Appearances (Goals): 3(0) *

The latest addition to the squad is another player of proven quality at League Two level and has excelled in the division above. Liam Kelly was Oldham’s best player during his two-and-a-half years at the club, before making a surprise move last year to Leyton Orient where he managed four goals in 21 league appearances in central midfield before struggling with an injury, as well as the team being terrible. Provided that the injury doesn’t have lasting effects going into the upcoming season, Liam Kelly is the kind of signing you would make if you wanted to get out of League Two.

As a midfielder, he has everything you could want – he’s good on the ball, he can get stuck in, and he can drive forward to score goals. Kelly is a player who tends to accumulate bookings, which could be an issue as we’ve already signed Michael Doyle, but it shows that Mark Robins is moving towards more aggressive, physical players as he reshapes the squad – meaning that the hope we could rebuild around the young homegrown talent that won us the Checkatrade Trophy is looking increasingly unlikely. Mark Robins is not taking any risks with this new squad.
