A new goalkeeper, but one who has quite clearly arrived as a back-up option. At the age of of 25 years-old, Liam O’Brien has mustered just 60 league appearances and follows a path set by Ross Turnbull, Pegguy Arphexad and Stuart Taylor in being a career back-up keeper. O’Brien has sat on the bench at every single level of the Football League, so offers the kind of experience of sitting on plastic, wooden and metal seats that you really need in a number two goalkeeper.
Liam O’Brien’s longest run as a number one goalkeeper came at Dagenham and Redbridge two seasons ago where he made 25 appearances during the club’s recent relegation from League Two. He should be capable of stepping up for the odd game, but there’s little evidence to suggest that he’ll put up a concerted bid to be first-choice goalkeeper. This signing is more interesting in what it means for the future of Lee Burge, as well as Reice Charles-Cook, as it indicates that at least one of those two is set to leave.
