When Marc McNulty signed for us in the summer, I was among the many who thought we had just signed a 20-goal a season striker. It’s fair to say that he has been a disappointment thus far. His record in Scotland and his spells in England with Sheffield United and Portsmouth seemed to characterise him as an excellent penalty area striker, however, his problem thus far is that he’s been far too unselfish in his play, and has appeared reticent at times to pull the trigger in the penalty area.
It’s been difficult to figure out just what McNulty’s best attributes are and how he can be incorporated successfully into the side along with the other options available. However, the bigger problem with McNulty has been that he’s yet to justify the time and effort it has taken to find a role for him in the side. His work-rate seems to be his best attribute, but this wasn’t what anyone was expecting to praise him most for when he signed for the club. There’s still the faint hope that McNulty will find eventually play himself into form, but it’s been a disappointing start to his life at Coventry City.
