Michael Doyle’s arrival at the club as the first summer signing was a statement of intent from Mark Robins. Even though he was a soon-to-be 36 year-old League Two defensive midfielder, Doyle’s reputation as what can only be described as being a bastard made clear that would be coming into League Two prepared to scrap our way for every point. A couple of months into his second-spell at the club, Doyle has provided exactly what everyone expected him to, leading to a seamless transition to life in the fourth-tier.
Doyle’s has put in several masterclasses in the dark arts this season – most notably, in winding-up Swindon’s James Dunne into a red card. However, he has also provided good tactical and technical protection of the defence, making a number of key interceptions and tackles at crucial times to relieve pressure on the back four. His passing can be frustratingly hit-and-miss – in the same game, capable of picking out 30-yard cross-field passes and also failing to find a team-mate from five yards – but he’s not really here to orchestrate the midfield, he’s here to be our bastard. At his age, questions remain over whether there’ll be a point where his body starts breaking down over the course of the season, but thus far, Doyle is a crucial part of this side.
