A player who fell into the category of ‘potentially good’ for slightly too long, yet looked likely to leave over the summer following his first run of games in the starting line-up since breaking through into the first-team under Steven Pressley. There have been signs that Ryan Haynes is a player capable of developing into a major force from that left-back position, but he has been held back via a lack of first-team experience and possibly a lack of self-confidence at times too.
Haynes was one of several young players last season who benefited massively from the Checkatrade Trophy in allowing them to find their feet at first-team level. We saw against Wycombe and Brighton under-21s that Haynes’ his ability to drift past defenders, a desire to get into the penalty area, and presence of mind at crucial times make him someone with the potential to play at at least Championship-level. The defensive side of his game is lacking at times, and although it improved massively when given a run in the side during the second half of last season, it still needs to improve further. Additionally, he needs to offer greater end product when he gets forward, he has a tendency to cut inside onto his weaker right foot rather than pick out a team-mate, but at League Two-level, he should scare the life out of opposing defenders. We’ve done well to secure his future at the club, however, the onus is now back on Haynes to prove he’s more than just ‘potentially good’.
