Having been held back under Tony Mowbray, it feels like we’re only now seeing Ryan Haynes start to live up to the potential that he demonstrated in his first few appearances for the club a few years ago. Like many young attacking full-backs, there have been issues with his defensive application and concentration, but a run in the side since Russell Slade’s appointment as manager has allowed Haynes to learn from his mistakes, rather than being forced to stew on them as he previously had been, which clearly affected his confidence.
Haynes not only possesses attacking instincts and the ability to put high-quality crosses into the box, but there is a level of skill and intelligence in the way he runs with the ball and beats players that a lot of talented attacking full-backs lack. While a lot of similar players would struggle as a winger where there’s less space to operate in, Haynes is someone with the ability to play further forward and in tighter spaces. However, we’ve also seen more recently than Haynes can be a decent defender too, which is why he has a big future in the game as a left-back. With speculation that he’s being closely watched by Championship sides, I doubt we’re going to see Haynes get close to his potential at this football club, which is why it’s such a shame that Mowbray didn’t trust him enough to let us fans see more of the best of him.
